6 Perfect Calming Gifts for a Highly Sensitive Child
It’s the season of giving – and particularly at this time of year there are lots of anxious, stressed children about waiting for a visit from the man in red on Christmas Eve. And they’re not even the highly sensitive ones. Here are 6 ideas for perfect calming gifts for a highly sensitive child – all tried and tested in our home!
1. Relax Kids Meditation Books
I cannot rave enough about the Relax Kids meditation books. They are so much fun but oh so effective. Instant calming and time with your child. Win, win.
‘Relax Kids Aladdin’s Magic Carpet‘ is a fabulous book that uses fairy tales to introduce children to relaxation and meditation. You can read a review I wrote about this book here.
Stress balls make for a great stocking filler for a highly sensitive child who needs to have something in their hand to distract them, or relax them. This was one of the tips from a sensory integration therapist we visited. It stops fidgeting at the dining table and helps concentration in school whilst working on tasks that need focus.
Tangles are popular in our house too. And quite addictive to play with!
4. Silly Putty
Putty is great to play with. And calming. Try it. It’s also quite addictive!
You can get putty in all manner of colours and smells, as well as with accessories to make little monsters for example, or magnetic or sparkly. You name it, it probably exists.
Putty is also good as a child’s stocking present and serves the same purpose as a stress ball. It has a relaxing effect when squeezed or rolled around the hands. Thinking Putty goes a step further – with glow in the dark putty.
5. Weighted Blanket or Lap Pad
Weighted blankets are more and more popular, and for good reason. A lap pad is a great calming tool for a child to sit on the sofa with after a busy day. Simple but effective.
Kinetic sand has a mesmerising effect as it slides from your hands. Moulding it is relaxing – and the best news of all is that is sticks only to itself so any mess is easily clumped together and cleaned up. All in all a great calming tool – but a great investment for all the family to play with.
