A Little Bike Running in my Head
I love sharing books written for highly sensitive children. And ‘A Little Bike Running in my Head‘ is a great example of a book that will have little HSCs nodding with recognition. This is a children’s book unlike other books. It is a story but also an information book about being highly sensitive, but written in language that children will understand. So without further ado, let me introduce you and your children to Corinne Vonaesch’s book, A Little Bike Running in my Head.
Meet Alexander – a Highly Sensitive Child. Or Highly Sensitive Mouse
Alexander is a nine year old mouse. A highly sensitive mouse.
“Ever since I was little, I have been thinking a lot. I observe everything around me. I try to understand, and I ask myself questions, lots of questions about a lot of things. It never stops.
It’s like a little bike running in my head all the time.”
Alexander asks himself little questions, but big worldly questions too. Like many highly sensitive children do. He explains that questions turn into worries. And he reveals how different he is to his sister. She doesn’t ask any questions – and things seem easier for her.

This book provides children with lots of information about what it means to be highly sensitive in a fun, story like way. Whilst there are tons of beautiful illustrations, it’s not a picture book for very young children.

Alexander recalls a trip to an amusement park. An experience that left him feeling overwhelmed and confused.
“There were lots of people. They were swarming everywhere. I didn’t know what I wanted anymore, and that put me in a bad mood. This annoyed my sister who feared that it would make us go home too quickly.
Ashamed of my strange reactions … I didn’t understand why everyone was having fun except for me. Why wasn’t I able to enjoy the excitement?”
He has a friend who helps him understand why he feels like he does in various situations, and helps him understand there is nothing weird about how things make him feel! Through Alexander, children will come to understand their highly sensitive traits and what it means to be highly sensitive.
And eventually learn how to turn the negatives into positives.
The Author – Corrine Vonaesch
A Little Bike Running in my Head is written by Corrine Vonaesch, a teacher, a psychologist and… an illustrator. In her won words:
“Learning and gaining understanding about high sensitivity has been a great help for me, not only personally but also as a mother. That is why I wanted to write and illustrate a book on this subject. My hope is that it will help other parents and children on their journey through life, and that it will give them some keys, and the beginning of an understanding of this trait of personality.”
