Book Review: Angel Violet’s Magic Wings
Bonnie Snyde is the writer of Angel Violet’s Magic Wings and Alissa Shouts the illustrator. Snyde wrote the book with highly sensitive children aged 4 to 8 in mind. The author asked me to take a look at the book and share my thoughts.
What the Book is About
The idea behind Angel Violet is beautiful. Bonnie wrote this book to help little ones ‘sweep away’ everything they have ‘picked up’ during a day at (pre) school.
Angel Violet helps children think about and recognise their own feelings by means of their ‘sparkles’ which come from having a happy heart.
Sometimes our sparkles become dark and cloudy. But they get covered in dust because of things that happen to us. Or because of people around us and their emotions, which highly sensitive children often pick up as being their own.
In steps Angel Violet with her magic wings. Call for her and she sweeps away the dust from your sparkles! Through visualisation and conscious breathing, Angel Violet helps brighten children’s sparkles. She does this by calming them and giving their emotions a name and a place to put them.
The book is cleverly written. It is beautifully illustrated with images that children will really relate to. It also features parent notes on each page to help you with questions you can ask your child. Each page provides tips to help you support your HSC with their emotions, to get them talking about how they are feeling. A few examples:
What felt happy in your heart today? (younger)
What were three happy things in your day today? (older)
What are the three most favorite things from your day today? (older)
The Writer
The writer, Bonnie Snyder, has a background in teaching, coaching and counselling. She originally wrote the story for her granddaughter based on the concept of the Violet Flame. She’s therefore well placed to write a book for highly sensitive children. Consequently, she has succeeded in crafting a wonderful tool for highly sensitive children.
It is also worth noting that you can use this book on a number of levels. Bonnie writes in detail about why she uses the Violet Flame at the end of the book.
