Hey Highly Sensitive, Remember to Be Yourself!

Be yourself. That’s what sprung to mind whilst reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. This is one of the most important things I have learnt in recent years. If not the most important. Allowing our highly sensitive children (HSC) to be who they are is vital. They should know that being themselves is what is important. And they don’t need to change who they are to adapt to a world that was never designed with highly sensitives in mind.

Adapt to Survive? Be Yourself!

Society often requires our highly sensitive children (particularly our boys) to adapt in order to survive (school is a perfect example). As parents I believe one of our primary roles is to help our HSCs adapt without altering the core of who they are. This so that they do not become adults who hide away the real them. They need to not just survive the world we live in, but thrive and refuse to hide who they are away.

That’s our challenge.

A random connection! However, these are the thoughts reading The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry conjured up. If you have never read it, I can highly recommend it. It’s a charming, quirky read about a man that makes it his mission to walk 600 miles to a hospice to deliver a message to a woman he has not heard from in twenty years. It’s a great way to empty your bucket!

Update 2024: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry is now a film, and a lovely watch.
